School and Dance…

We went to Northside Elementary today and got Rosie and Mikela registered for school. They do NOT have to have social security cards so we’re set! They do need to get their immunizations up to date which they will do next week. They can’t go to school before that.

I found myself in tears walking the halls of the school – I know – probably hormones! I guess it’s one of those things where you don’t know what you have till it’s gone. I don’t think I ever thought about how blessed we are to have the schools we do. To walk the halls and see the library, music room, gym, and even computer rooms – it’s overwhelming. I mean my kids were going to a little school with 50 kids in their class and definitely not anything special. Now they’re introduced into this whole new world.

Mikela kept saying all day long – my new school is HUGE! Rosie really loved the tour – so much so that she threw herself down on the ground when I said it was time to go! Yeah – good luck to her teacher!!! LOL!

The girls went to dance class tonight! I have to tell you that it was really akward when I was in the waiting room before class started. Rosie and Mikela are the only black girls in this dance class. The other 4 year olds kept asking  – Why are they black? Will they be in the black class? Where is their mom? How come their mom isn’t black? – – They were very innocent questions but they were asked SO LOUD that the other 20 parents could hear everything. Two of them apologized to me. I told them it was okay – it was just weird!

They were so excited to wear their little uniforms and their instructor said they were great. Mikela of course picked up on everything really quickly. Rosie was all over the place but behaved herself well. Malaya just stared at the instructor and the mirrors that covered the wall! Funny!! They were so excited when they came out and showed me all their new moves!

Mikela said today was the best day ever! I kind of felt like one of those soccer moms – taking the kids to school – take the girls to dance class – it was nice. This isn’t what I wanted – being stuck here in the states – but God has certainly blessed us since we’ve been out.

  1. It was so good to see you guys at the school today. I still can’t believe I am going to be teaching Mikela at school in KY. How weird is that?!?!?!

  2. I know you don’t know me, but I love your blog, and feel like I am friends with your family even though we’ve never met.

My husband tried to come down on the surgery trip last April, and was in Miami when it got cancelled.

Your girls look so beautiful! I’m excited for them with this new chapter of school, etc.

I’m so sorry if I”m out of line, but …. when I read your entry, I just had to put in something.

As someone who has lived through it, and wished someone had warned me…….please let me tell you a little about the legal situation here with vaccines, and please at least consider looking on the internet for more info. before you make a decision.

It is dangerous to get more than one shot at a time — many kids can handle it, but many can’t — there are scores of immunization injured children out there. Kids need at least a few months between each shot for their systems to recover. It’s an awful lot of stuff to pump into their little systems all at once.

There is a slogan around the United States these days: “Educate before you Vaccinate”. I wish I’d done this myself.

It is also quite unsafe to administer any immunizations to children who are in the middle of any colds or viruses.

Here’s two links to the laws for vaccines in Kentucky:

    http://www.lrc.state.ky.us/kar/902/002/060.htm

214.036 Exceptions to testing or immunization requirement.
Nothing contained in KRS 158.035, 214.010, 214.020, 214.032 to 214.036, and 214.990 shall be construed to require the testing for tuberculosis or the immunization of any child at a time when, in the written opinion of his attending physician, such testing or immunization would be injurious to the child’s health. Nor shall KRS 158.035, 214.010, 214.020, 214.032 to 214.036, and 214.990 be construed to require the immunization of any child whose parents are opposed to medical immunization against disease, and who object by a written sworn statement to the immunization of such child on religious grounds. Provided, however, that in the event of an epidemic in a given area, the Cabinet for Health Services may, by emergency regulation, require the immunization of all persons within the area of epidemic, against the disease responsible for such epidemic. Effective: July 15, 1998 History: Amended 1998 Ky. Acts ch. 426, sec. 396, effective July 15, 1998. — Amended 1980 Ky. Acts ch. 55, sec. 1, effective July 15, 1980. — Amended 1976 Ky. Acts ch. 128, sec. 4. — Amended 1974 Ky. Acts ch. 74, Art. VI, sec. 107(3). — Amended 1968 Ky. Acts ch. 87, sec. 4. — Created 1962 Ky. Acts ch. 95, sec. 4.

Also, in this law, it states that:

    Under KRS Chapter 13A,

All public or private primary or secondary schools and preschool programs shall require a current immunization certificate for any child enrolled……within 2 weeks of any child’s attendance.

So, they legally can attend for two weeks before you have to have your certificate in to the office.

Enjoy your new school – sorry for putting in my two cents ~ but if I later read something bad happened when I felt so much like I was supposed to write this, I wouldn’t have been able to forgive myself.

I know you, as the parent, must make this decision…..but I just wanted to tell you there is another side to this whole vaccine thing in the US.

    God Bless,
    LInda

  3. I appreciate all the info! Thanks for caring so much to write it all down. We plan to talk to the doctor about it on Monday!!

  4. I was struck by how mature Makela looks. She has lost her baby faced look entirely. Kerwin has too and it makes me sad sometimes. The girls looked so cute in their dance outfits. I hope they continue to enjoy it!
