Ministry Needs

My name is Jody Castillo and my husband and I are the Campus Managers for the Northwest Haiti Christian Mission. My parents, Larry and Diana Owen, founded the mission in 1979 and my brother, Janeil Owen, is currently the Executive Director.

In Haiti there is a saying we often hear – “After God – there is only you”. It’s an overwhelming feeling to know that after they ask their Father in Heaven, we’re that next step for so many people. What happens when there is only one spot left in the orphanage for the baby whose mother died during childbirth? What happens when we know that once they leave those gates that baby is going to die?  What happens when they asked God, then come to us and we can’t help them?

Daily we find ourselves in the position of making life and death choices. After God, the Haitians place their hope in us. My request to your mission board or to you personally is that you send donations to be used as our benevolent ministry. As of now, we do not have a fund to pull from for emergency needs at the mission.

For example, our precious little Guepson was a special-needs child that came to the mission several years ago. He passed away from pneumonia. Jose and I made all the arrangements and struggled to come up with the funds that we simply don’t have. This is a picture of him with his dad.

I was asked often this past January – how do you do this every day – make these decisions that could change the path, the life – of so many Haitians? It’s very humbling to be in this position and some days – like this past January when a little disabled child was left outside the gate – it’s overpowering.  So many Americans came to me crying – asking for me to take this little baby in. I told them if we take this one, tomorrow there will be 10 more left at the gate.

How heart-wrenching to watch this little child crying, flies covering her little face.  I patiently waited for one of the Haitians to step up. Sometimes we take away the chance for Haitians to be a blessing to their own people by acting too quickly. I watched as little school children tried to feed her cheetos and swat the flies away. What a story they will have to tell their mom – about how they helped this little girl. I watched as crowds surrounded her and watched her lay there so lifeless. I also watched as a young married Christian man took home this little girl late that evening to raise as his own.

I felt like that was God’s wisdom for me – to act slowly. I pray for His wisdom every day. I think her mom must have felt – After God – there is only you and she left her baby there.

Would you condsider designating your funds to the “Mole Ministry”? Your checks would continue to go Northwest Haiti Christian Mission, all you would need to do is write “Mole Ministry” on the memo line. This fund will allow us to manage the ministry as the needs of the people become The Call.

I can assure you this will not go directly to our family but be used to help the hundreds who come to us weekly.

Jose and I would be more than happy to speak with you on the phone, correspond through email, or even meet with you and discuss our excitement in person.

After God, there’s you. While the burden is great, the blessings from being the next in line behind the Father are even more overwhelming. God is good. We appreciate your faithfulness to His calling.

CHECKS CAN BE MADE TO:

  1. Hi Jody and Jose I’m so overwhelmed by your work for the LORD in haiti.. I feel very thankful for your ministry and the same time I feel I have to do something… I been seen on tv the people desperate for food and that was very touching for me.. I would like to know if the donations would be for the hurricane relief or for other use on your ministry… I’ll be praying for you guys and hope to hear soon from you,

    thank you.

GOD Bless you in all of your proyects and lifes. aDIOS.

    sincerely,
    Miguel Villa.

  2. Thanks for your encouraging words. We have been very blessed by this ministry – God is constantly teaching us – stretching us – and molding us into who He wants us to be.

I actually am grateful when God lays the burden of Haiti on someone’s heart. It allows us to share the burden instead of carrying it alone.

Any donations you make to the mission – by check or online – http://www.nwhcm.org – – you can specify where you would like that donation to go. If you want it to go to hurricane relief – you can mark it that. If you want it to go to our benevolent ministry – you can mark it for that as well. Right now – they kind of seem to be the same thing because most of our benevolent ministry is being used to help families who were affected by the hurricane. Either way it’s a huge blessing to the people here.

It was great to hear from you and please let me know if there is anything I can help you with.

  3. Hi Jody,

I am so sad to hear all the misery and needs in Haiti, I was at your mission a few years back, my heart is with Haiti but due to my hubby’s grave sickness I could not leave him anymore. I have sent a donation to the headquarters of NW Mission in Versailles. I hope that you will get it because my intention for you people to be able to use it as needed… In the future, I will send to your attention, If I can be of any help besides money and prayers, let me know, if you need to put any kids away from the misery, my home is open.. I am old (68 but in good health and have 5 acres and grand kids living on our propriety.
Melonnie Kelly knows me, and so is Pastor Jose ( I live in a small

    1. Thanks Marie France. I really appreciate all you do for our people here. Keep us in your prayers.

      1. I just learned of your ministry through Pierre Garcon’s website. My husband and I adopted a little one from Haiti 5 years ago and of course, it continues to have an incredibly special place in our hearts.

We are so excited to learn about all of the wonderful things that you’re doing and are hoping to support you in your work as you receive many refugees from Port-Au-Prince. Please keep us updated on all of your needs.

        Peace and Blessings,

  4. I am emailing in response to volunteer my services to those effected by the earthquake. If there are any short term mission trips going on in the near future I would like to be involved I feel like God is urging me in some way to go down there. God bless

  5. Jody,

My husband John and I would like you to know we will open our home to children in need. I know the government there has restrictions, but any guidance from your experience would be wonderful.
We have two children who are 12 and 9 and are prepared to adopt a child in the orphanage.
I know you are very busy with the earthquake, but please let us know if you any suggestions.

Thank you, for all you do,

    Kathryn

  6. Hi Jody and Jose

I was sent a link to your blog, as I would love to come and do some work in Haiti.
    How can I help?
I was working in missions for 5 months in South Sudan, Africa, last year and trained in missions with Iris Ministries in Mozambique.
I would love to help you with any disaster relief, working with the children, helping in administration etc…
Please email me so we can discuss this further

    God Bless

    Amy

  9. Hi Jody and Jose, I was there this past Christmas through January 6th 2016 with the Epstein group from Florida. At church, we are kicking off a coin program where the children collect coins for one particular child. Please send current photo, name and birthday of the child. Each of our children will pick one orphan to collect money for and we’ll send it every now and then. (to be determined) every penny helps. send these to the Chapel or to Lauren Epstein. Blessings.
