For Real…

Smile. Wave. All is great! Not too bad. Thanks for asking!

For those of us in ministry it can often feel like we’re on a stage! Keep eyes wide open – smile! Don’t show struggle. Don’t show too much emotion. Empty your cup. Empty your cup. (What there’s nothing in my cup?). Shoot. Well I’ll just pretend.

The thing that I LOVE about my daughter Gigi is that you know exactly how she feels. If she’s having a good day – she’s giggling & talking to her hand! If she’s having a bad day – she sits on the couch and barely moves. If you walk past her –  she’ll smack you on your back as hard as she can. She doesn’t know how to “fake it”. It’s just raw and real.

Sometimes we get so good at being on stage in front of our “audience” that we can accidentally carry it over to our prayer life. All of a sudden we’re not even being real with Jesus and it’s not because we’re trying to be dishonest. We’ve just gotten so good at pretending.

I was listening to Francis Chan preach about how God doesn’t hear all our prayers! (WHAT?) I was caught so off guard by that. What he was meaning was  – when you pray with doubt or aren’t genuine-  it’s like clanging cymbals. It’s like a mosquito buzzing around your ear.

God wants us to be bold in our prayers – and more importantly – He wants us to be  – FOR REAL!

God loves a lullaby
In a mother’s tears in the dead of night
Better than a Hallelujah sometimes

God loves the drunkard’s cry
The soldier’s plea not to let him die
Better than a Hallelujah sometimes

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful, the mess we are
The honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah

The woman holding on for life
The dying man giving up the fight
Are better than a Hallelujah sometimes

The tears of shame for what’s been done
The silence when the words won’t come
Are better than a Hallelujah sometimes

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful, the mess we are
The honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah

Better than a church bell ringing
Better than a choir singing out, singing out

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful, the mess we are
The honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah

We pour out our miseries
God just hears a melody
Beautiful, the mess we are
The honest cries of breaking hearts
Are better than a Hallelujah

(Better than a Hallelujah sometimes)
Better than a Hallelujah
(Better than a Hallelujah sometimes)
